Fluorescent lamps
Fluorescent lamps are not as powerful as a High Intensity Discharge (HID) or High Pressure Sodium (HPS) in terms of lumen output and wattages. Fluorescent lamps generate far less heat than HID lamps which makes them a good light for applications with limited ventilation. They also use much less energy than HID lamps.

It's certainly possible to grow decent crops using fluorescent lamps, however, plants will take much longer to mature and flower. Plants will stretch getting tall and leggy because of the low light level. Fluorescent light is perfect for seedlings and short growing plants.

If you are really considering using fluorescent lamps to grow crops a Very High Output (VHO) lamp is recommended. VHO's comes in higher wattages than regular fluorescent and offer more lumens and will grow plants more compact with bigger flowers.
