From Backyards to Deserts to Underground in Tokyo – Hydroponics is Everywhere |
|
|
Hydroponics is one of the fastest growing plant cultivation techniques.
You are likely to find someone in your local area growing plants using
hydroponics. From the driest regions of Africa, Canada, New Zealand to
underground in a skyscraper in downtown Tokyo – Hydroponics is
progressively invading every region and culture due to it’s
flexibility, manageability and performance.
In the middle of Otemachi, Tokyo, a busy financial district,
is a 1,000 sq. meter hydroponics farm in the basement of a
building.
More than 100 varieties of crops are grown in the basement farm using
hydroponics. The experiment began in February, and is a campaign
to raise public awareness about agriculture and to train Tokyo’s
jobless citizen, including, those who lost their jobs in commercial
agriculture during the Japanese banking crisis. The campaign was
started by Japan’s leading temporary recruitment agency Pasona.
The farm is located in the same building as Pasona’s headquarters, and
is called “Pasona 02,” utilizing six rooms in two underground floors in
the building.
Plants being grown, include vegetables like tomatoes, lettuce and organic
rice. Flowers are also being cultivated in the underground
hydroponics farm.
