Interactive Encyclopedia of North American Weeds weed identification and introductiory botany DVD-ROM has just been released by the Southern Weed Science Society.

Champaign, IL October 8, 2004 - The third version of the Interactive Encyclopedia of North American Weeds weed identification and introductiory botany DVD-ROM has just been released by the Southern Weed Science Society. The program covers 447 weed species from the entire US and Canada with detailed descriptions, distribution maps, habitat keys, weed histories, and an illustrated glossary of 565 botanical terms.

Earlier versions of the program have been very popular with gardeners, horticulturalists and groundskeepers, agronomists, farmers, high school and college students, herbalists, and flower and botany enthusiasts.

"For Version 3 we have added 85 new weeds, upgraded the hundreds of illustrations, and re-imported and edited all 2,450 high-resolution weed photographs in the program," says Mike DeFelice, the program producer.

A visual weed identification key to all weeds and crops has been added to the three hours of professionally narrated, interactive lessons on introductory botany and plant identification that form the core of the program. The Interactive Encyclopedia of North American Weeds now has an excellent balance of extensive teaching/tutorials, weed identification assistance, breadth of weed species covered, and depth of information on each of the weeds.

"The new fully illustrated, interactive identification keys provide a unique and fun way to identify unknown weed species," says Dr. DeFelice.

Volunteer weed scientists, botanists, and agronomists from all over the United States and Canada have contributed to this project over the last 25 years. The upgrade is so large it had to be put on a DVD-ROM to hold the 2.3 GB of information.

All proceeds go to the Southern Weed Science Society to support their research, teaching, and public service activities. The program runs on Microsoft Windows 98 2nd ed/Me/2000/XP and requires 1024 x 768 XGA graphics, a sound card, and a DVD-ROM drive.
