Coconut fiber is a versatile grow media that can be used in soil and hydroponics because it is biodegradable. Coconut fiber is also very durable, resistant to rot and is made of compressed, shredded coconut shell fibers and comes in various forms.

Shredded coconut fiber is sometimes used in soil cultivation in place of peat moss, while others use it as mulch. Some hydroponics cultivators top off their rockwool grow media with shredded coconut fiber for better moisture retention.
Brick or cubed coconut fiber is best suited for plant propagation while the shredded form works better in ebb & flow and drip systems. Coconut fiber also retain its original shape fairly well and can be reused in hydroponics applications or used for improving soil.
