Homemade hydroponics: bamboo garden |
|
|
|
Bamboo is simply a grass that varies in height; from one ft. dwarft to giant timber bamboo grass that can grow to over 100 ft. Bamboos are used for various reasons including decorative, food, construction material and as a growing container thanks to Mr. Waziweyi.
Requirements: To construct a bamboo hydroponics system, you'll need some bamboo poles (not live plants -- cut, dried bamboo poles), soilless grow media (any kind), and fertilizer (hopefully organic :-). If all you can get is live bamboo plants, don't fret. Simply cut the plant to your desired height and allow to try. Instructions: 1.Cut the poles or have the supplier cut the bamboo poles to about 3 ft. in height.
Mark the pole about 6-12 inches (1/2-1 ft.) from the bottom (part going in ground) with a marker or pen to indicate the desired height of your pole. In other words, you'll dig a hole in the ground about 6-12 inches deep to firmly hold the bamboo poles. About 1.5" (inches) from (above) the marked line, drill one hole to act as a water regulator.
Dig holes in ground for bamboo poles (see # 2 above).
Cover the bottom of the bamboo poles (part going in ground) with plastic secured with a rubber band, et. Prick plastic with a pin for drainage holes or simply place the poles in ground.
Fill with soilless grow medium (any kind), plant seeds and water.

Footnotes: This type of hydroponics gardening can be done by placing the bamboo poles in the ground or built on a structure. Poles placed in ground do not need plastic covering on the bottom of the bamboo. |
