A soil-less mix is used as the grow media which is a unique combination of organic products consisting of composted pine bark and perilite and has a neutral pH level. This special soil-less mix can be reused over and over with the need to change the media.

Leaching the media is often required as salts from fertilizers may build up over time. Plants get root rot when there's excessive salts in the growing media. Mineral or salt accumulation is basically caused by a plant having an over abundance of fertilizer that has crystallized. The Smart Planter system helps to prevent salt build up through a natural capillary process.
