There are various types of strawberries available for cultivation. Learn about the different strains of strawberries and about their strong and weak points.

Early to Mid-season strawberry varieties:


1. Annapolis
The Annapolis strawberry is an early marturing (Blooming) variety, medium-large in size. This strawberry variety produces firm, medium-sized, orange-red color berries.

+ Unlike the Veestar variety, the Annapolis is more firm, making it more suitable for shipping and it's resistant to red stele.

-- The Annapolis, however, is not as productive as Veestar and is susceptible to powdery mildew and angular leaf spot. Additionally, it's Sensitive to Sinbar.


2. Brunswick
The Brunswick is a cross between "Honeoye x Cavendish" and is an early to mid-season bloomer that produces good yields of firm, glossy berries with good quality and average-good flavor. Fruit is larger than Honeoye but smaller than the Cavendish variety.

+ The Brunswick strawberry is a productive plant with good fruit quality and is resistant to red stele.

-- This variety is susceptible to Phytophthora crown rot.  The Brunswick taste more like Honeoye than Cavendish and can be sensitive to Sinbar.


3. Evangeline
The Evangeline strawberry is a early maturing, medium-size, vigorous, healthy plant with flower and fruit clusters held upright, above ground.

+ The Evangeline produces bautiful berries of  good quality with firm skin, good shape and a large green calyx. It tolerate leaf diseases well and has a good flavor.

-- At first, the berries appear to be quite large, however, size is variable and drops off quick. Overall, the Evangeline produces small berries and yields low.


4. Glooscap
The Glooscap strawberry variety is a high yielding, early to mid-season bloomer that produces medium to large dark red fruit with a good flavor.

+ This variety produces good size initially and high yields with good winter hardiness and decaps easily.

-- The Glooscap produces dark colored berries with pale raised seeds. It's susceptible to red stele.


5. Honeoye

The Honeoye is an early to mid-season bloomer that adapts well and is a high yielding variety. Growers can expect high yields of medium-large, firm, bright red berries.

+ The Honeoye strawberry is produces Good yields, good fruit quality and consistent fruit size.

-- This variety has a sharp or acidic taste, depending on growing environment with a deep dark color when overripe. Inconsistent ripening of fruit, with the tip being the last part of the fruit to ripen. It's also fairly sensitive to Sinbar and susceptibe to black root rot.


6. Sable
The sable strawberry is an early maturing variety that produces bright red berries on vigorously growing, tall plants. Their berries are firmer than Veestar but less firm than Annapolis.

+ The Sable produce berries that are bright red, with a good flavor. They are good winter hardiness and resistant to red stele.

-- Sable strawberry is susceptible to angular leaf spot and Botrytis and produce soft berries.


7. Veestar
The veestar variety was produced by the Horticultural Research Institute of Ontario in 1967. This is an early season, medium-sized variety. The Veestar variety is a vigorous, high yielding plant with medium berries runs well. 

+ The Veestar straberry is dark red in color with an excellent flavor that makes great jam. It's also a reliable cultivar and can tolerate sinbar; a herbicide. 

-- The veestar strawberry is moderately soft, however, making it less suitable for shipping than other varieties. It tend to change color in warm-hot weather to a dark red. It's also suseptable to red stele.




Mid-Season stawberry varieties:

1. Chambly
Chambly is a cross between "Sparkle x Honeoye" and is a mid-season, medium-sized variety. This strain of strawberry is a high yielding variety that produces deep red berries, similar in size and firmness to Kent, but with a tougher skin. Chambly berries are conical, have a elevated calyx and the leaves curl upwards at the edges. 

+ Chably strawberries are very productive with a good flavor if it's harvested before the berries overripe.

-- Chambly may produce soft fruits and might be a deep dark color if allowed to overripe. This strain tend to produce a high neck and caps easily. If overripe the berries have a bitter taste.


2. Cavendish
Cavendish is a cross between "Glooscap x Annapolis" and is a mid-season, large growing plant. This strawberry variety is a high yielding strain with large to very large berries of medium firmness.

+ The Cavendish produces very large berries and is a high yielder. It's resistant to red stele and can be harvested over a long period.

-- The Cavendish may produce fruits with uneven color under certain conditions like hot weather. White, dark purple and red colors may be present on a single berry. The skin may be tender and become soft in warm weather. It's also sensitive to Sinbar and highly susceptible to angular leaf spot.


3. Kent
Kent is a mid-season, medium-sized plant with lots of large, blue-green foliage.  Kent strawberries produces high yields of bright red fruits.

+ Kent is a high yielding strawberry variety.

-- Kent berries tend to have weak skin in hot conditions, very susceptible to leaf spot, leaf scorch and angular leaf spot. The plant tend to wilt and berries turn dark in hot weather. It's highly sensitive to Sinbar and produces multi-crowned plants with few runners is the temperature is hot.


4. Mesabi
Mesabi is a cross between "Glooscap x MNUS99" and is a mid-season, large to ver large strain of strawberry. This is a high yielding variety with large, medium to dark red fruits that are somewhat irregular in shape.

+ The Mesabi strawberry strain have a long harvest period, high yields, large fruit size, good flavor.

-- The Mesabi strawberry variety may produce inconsistent fruit shape, indented calyx and is susceptible to fruit rot.


5. Sapphire
Sapphire is a late to mid-season variety, similar to Kent. Sapphire produces consistently shaped, bright red, large berries with a good, often mild flavor with medium firmness.

+ Sapphire is a vigorous plant with tolerance for Sinbar. This variety produces beautiful berries.

-- Sapphire is susceptible to Botrytis, however, its disease tolerance is relatively unknown.


6. Mira
Mira strawberry is a cross between "Scott x Honeoye" mid-season to late mid-season (Few days after Kent), large growing variety. Mira is a high yielding, fairly vigourous plant, with bright red conical firm berries that are uniform in shape.

+ Mira is a high yielding plant, similar to Kent, but berries are firmer and have better quality in comparison. It maintains good quality in hot weather, resistant to red stele and most leaf diseases. It also maintains good size for several harvests.

-- Mira has a fair to tart flavor. The fruits may be fully uniformly colored before flavor reach peak and it's sensitive to Sinbar.


7. Jewel
Jewel is a fairly vigorous plants with good yield and produce bright, glossy, red large berries that are conical in shape.

+ Jewel strawberries are bright and glossy red, good yield, however, not as productive as Honeoye or Kent. Good for freezing.

-- Jewel is susceptible to winter injury, leaf spot, red stele, powdery mildew and Verticillium. The berries darkens and turns soft in hot weather. Flavor is bland and the strain might be sensitive to Sinbar. 


8. Cabot
Cabot is a mid-season, large growing strawberry variety. Cabot produces very large, bright red, juicy berries, on large firm plants.

+ Cabot produces very large berries. On average, Gardeners' can expect over 20 grams.

-- Cabot may produce irregular shaped berries with thin skin and may be susceptible to Botrytis. Cabot is not a runner and are susceptible to crown rot. Good flavor but not very sweet.


9. Seneca
Seneca is a mid-season, medium to large-sized plant that produces firm, round, medium red berries with a strong skin that does not bruise easily.

+ Seneca strawberry produces very firm berries with good quality.

-- Seneca is not a vigorous plant. It also tend to lose it's hardiness in certain regions. Highly susceptible to red stele and the two-spotted spider mite. Seneca also has little to no flavor.


10. Allstar
Allstar strawberry is a mid-season, large growing plant. Allstar is a vigorous plant with orange-red berries that are fairly uniform in shape and size with raised seeds.

+ Allstar berries have a good flavour with, firm beautifully colored fruits. 

-- Allstar has prominent seeds and after two harvests, berry size tend to decline. It's also highly susceptible to angular leaf spot.


11. Governor Simcoe
Governor Simcoe is a mid to late-season blooming variety. Its a large and vigorous plant with light green foliage. Berries are vibrant, light red in color with pale interior.

+ Governor Simcoe produces firm fruits with a strong skin, ships well and has a mild, pleasant flavor.

-- This variety is susceptible to powdery mildew, leaf blight and is somewhat sensitive to Sinbar. Produce can be inconsistent in cooler regions and on heavy soils.



Late-season strawberry varieties:

1. Latestar
Latestar is a late-season, large growing, multi-crowned plants with green foliage and few runners.

+ The latestar produces berries with a tough skin, shiny color, mild acidic flavor and it's quite firm. This variety can be very productive; however yield may vary in certain regions. It's resistant to red stele, most fungal leaf diseases and fruit rots.

-- Latestar is susceptible to leaf blight, yield vary accoring to location, produces few runners and multi-crowns. In it's second season, the berry may be unacceptable in terms of size (small).


2. Startyme
Typical plae red berries are produced by the Startyme variety.

+ This is a late-season, large growing plant. It's berries are fairly firm with a relatively strong skin. This plant is vigorous and produce large berries that can be picked with caps off.

-- Startyme is susceptible to powdery mildew and leaf spot and may be difficult to pick its berries with the cap attached. It's flavor is not very good.


3. MicMac
The micMac is a late-season, medium to large growing plant with large foliage, bright red, fairly firm berries.

+ Vibrant berries, ships good, and the plant produce consistent size berries throughout it's growing season.

-- Highly sensitive to Sinbar and yields less than moderate.


4. Bounty
Bounty is a medium growing, late-season variety that produce moderate-high yields of drak red berries.

+ Bounty strawberries taste good and yields can be high.

-- Bounty is highly sensitive to Sinbar and typically produce small berries after first harvest. Berries are dark in color.


5. Serenity
Serenity strawberry plants produce high yields of large, vibrant soft-skinned berries.

+ This variety produces large fruits and yields high.

-- Skin is fairly soft.


6. Scotland
Scotland is a late-season, large growing plant with large conical berries with large, beautiful calyx.

+ Firm berries

-- Berries may be too firm and reduce in size after first harvest. Also has prominent seeds and turn dark


7. St.Pierre
High yielding variety with large bright light red berries, large green calyx and great quality fruits.

+ St. Pierre produces consistent berry size with good flavor and shelf life. Can be vigorous in certain areas.

-- Only limited testing has been perfomed on this variety.


8. Winona
Winona produces large, firm, glossy berries initally on vigorous plants.

+ This is a winter hardy variety that tolerates Sinbar, resistant to red stele and has a good flavor. Late season variety.

-- Winona tend to produce unevenly shaped berries with dimples. Berry size may reduce after first harvest. Berries grow low to the ground on long stalks and berries can get tangled, making it difficult to harvest. It's also susceptible to leaf diseases like angular leaf spot.

9. Yamaska
Yamaska is a late-season, large plant with plae green foliage and bright red, round berries.

+ This is a late season variety with firm, beautiful berries.

-- May develop leaf spots. Flowers are female and must be pollinated by using another late blooming strain.
